Thoughts and prayers needed
I am just back from shooting a beautiful wedding in Topsail Island (will post photos soon), but am sad to report that my beautiful, sweet mom has just been diagnosed with a (hopefully benign) brain tumor. It's a long story, but she's been feeling poorly for a few days and couldn't figure out why. My brother and his wife and my dad took her to the hospital today to see if she was just fighting the flu, and I guarantee no one expected to see a dark spot on her CT scan. She is in the hospital tonight in Stony Brook, New York, since my folks have moved up to Shelter Island for the summer. My siblings and I will all be joining them in a few days, as was the plan to celebrate July 4th, so now it is good that we can all be there for her surgery and recovery. I'm very melancholy and worried tonight, as you can well imagine, and it makes me grateful for all the joyful events I get to be part of for so many families. You all cheer me up, always.
Please bear with me if it takes a few days to get back to you if you've written with any questions or inquiries. I'll be in New York from July 3-14th, shooting a wedding and being with family. I will check email and the blog, though, so will not be entirely out of reach. Sigh. A more cheerful post will be pending soon, since I have a few sweet shoots to share before I leave Thursday.
Here's my mom last year holding Baby Lila at three days old, and then bringing me a cake on my (fill in any number here) birthday a few days later. Isn't she gorgeous?

SHE'S B-A-A-C-K! (KATIE, THAT IS)
As some of you know, our own Katie Klein has been lying low for the past few months because she was indeed great with child. Her beautiful boy Eli was born four weeks ago, but even more amazingly, she shot Chrissy and Robert's wedding on Saturday -- only three weeks after giving birth (totally drug-free, by the way). Katie did a beautiful job on the wedding and on Chrissy's makeup (here's a link to Katie's makeup site -- she books up fast, so hurry if you want to reserve her for your wedding date). In the next post are the results of a tag-team wedding shoot by Katie, Taryn and me. We had a blast!

Chrissy & Robert, June 14th
This smart, thoughtful, altruistic couple met a few years ago while they were working as counselors at a summer camp. They are both teachers, and the kind of people that make you want to call up your favorite childhood teacher (for me it was Miss Daly, 2nd grade) and tell him or her how much you appreciate everything they did for you. These two will be getting calls like that for the rest of their lives, guaranteed.
Their wedding was well attended (read: huge!) and spilling over with family and friends who have known one or both of them since way back when. The intrepid Katie (see above) shot all the getting ready and ceremony shots and then Taryn and I shot the reception while Katie went home to take care of baby Elias (and soak her feet, no doubt).
The flower girl, Allie, who is one of Chrissy's former students:

Lovely red details:
Chrissy:
Chrissy and Robert decided to see each other in the sanctuary for a few minutes before the ceremony, a tear-jerker of a moment that we were lucky enough to be able to witness:
During the middle of the ceremony, the skies outside clouded over and it began to rain. The sanctuary got dark just as Chrissy and Robert lit candles:
Katie caught this wonderful moment between Chrissy and her dad moments after the ceremony:
First dance time (to Van Morrison's "Crazy Love"):
I snuck outside with them for a few photos -- notice how they never take their eyes off each other?
Chrissy later did what I recommend for all brides -- changed into her Birks!
I absolutely love this shot and how the light surrounds them -- it's also emanating from them, as anyone who was there can attest:
Congrats, and thank you for letting us be part of a perfect day!

Jenn & Marc, Sarasota, Florida
As one can imagine, Jenn and Marc's beach wedding was stunning, with flawless planning and details by Nicole Kaney, and at the center of it all, the lovely -- and very much in love -- Jenn and Marcus. It was so sweet to see them with their families, and Jenn created all kinds of surprises for Marc, including a private dinner in their room between parties, complete with a violinist playing Debussy. I was lucky enough to have Carrie Pratt available to come shoot the day with me, and some of her images are here.
Here are a few favorites:
The programs were cleverly designed to serve as fans for the guests, and they wrote their own vows:

Jenn spotted her wedding dress three years ago and knew it was the one for her -- she bought it even before she was engaged!
The exquisite flowers were by Tiger Lily. Little cones were filled with flower petals for tossing on the newlyweds:
I love this shot of Jenn, who looks like one of Degas' dancers:
my favorite time is always that first private (sort of!) moment as husband and wife:
Jenn's niece Madison was so adorable, and I love how sweet they are together here:
Look at that water!
After the morning ceremony, everyone took the afternoon to rest, swim and enjoy Sarasota, and then we reconvened for a dessert reception, and Jenn and Marc made their entrance by doing a beautiful waltz:
They made their grand exit while everyone lit sparklers and cheered them on. Congratulations, guys!

Thank you for choo-choo trains
We drove down to Spencer, NC on Saturday, on a rare weekend at home with my beloveds, because Joaquin is obsessed with trains right now. During pre-bedtime prayers the other night he piped up three times to add "and for choo-choo trains?" to the list of things for which we were giving thanks. He really cracks me up right now. I realize that all the photos I have of him he is strapped into his car seat, but I am not kidding when I say that is the only way he will be still long enough for a photo! He has worn this conductor's hat every day this week, even wearing it into the bathtub as compromise for not being allowed to bring in the entire wooden train set into the water:
While in Spencer, we checked out the NC Transportation Museum, which was much cooler than it sounds, and I got a sweet shot of Joaquin and his dad on their first train ride together.
Our friend Elizabeth came along, and I just love this sweet moment between her and Lila:
Here I see a sassy, confident girl, already working her sunglasses!
The weekend before last, my parents came for a visit. Joaquin and Lila are their 10th and 11th grandchildren and they dote on all of us with so much love. We'll be gathering on Shelter Island (NY) this summer for my dad's 80th birthday.
I love this first shot of him and Lila, and then she seems to be lecturing him on something important:

Part of the reason my folks drove up from Florida was to deliver a set of wooden chairs that my dad made. My brothers and sisters and I had a set of these when we were little, and Dad made a new set from memory. Pretty impressive, right?
Meanwhile, I happened to catch this shot of the babies enjoying their new chairs:
