07.24.10  |  Personal
summer hiatus
My to-do list for this week: go to a matinee (either "Inception" or "Salt" or both), finish reading The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, catch up on episodes of "True Blood" and "This American Life," go to the pool with the kids, take a nap each afternoon, go for walks in the evenings, make huge batch of pesto, tomato sandwiches, blueberry pancakes and peach cobbler. When all of these are checked off my list, I'll back in the office on August 2nd. Enjoy your own summer hiatus!

a midsummer wedding: andrea + michael
If it weren't for the occasional iPhone poking out of someone's sparkly clutch or dapper coat pocket, I could have sworn this wedding took place in 1953 in the Principality of Monaco. Andrea is one of those luminous beauties who is even more stunning because she pays no attention to how people see her -- she is even a tad bit goofy, which makes her very appealing. But boy, does the camera love her. As does her husband, as you can see here! They met on the tennis court while both were students at Elon, and they now live in DC. You might remember her { bridal portraits } from a few weeks back. In a word: YUM.

A few credits: the pink paper flowers on the vintage car were handmade by the bride and her mom and sister (a correction to my earlier assertion that they came from Etsy -- sorry!). The shot of them recessing down the aisle (one of my favorites) was taken from the choir loft by { Traci }, as was the cool scene-setter of the vintage car in front of the reception venue. As usual, she is capturing light in incredible ways. The last two shots in this post (bouquet toss and exit) are by { Marissa Kaplan }, a college student who has been interning with me each summer for the past four years. She is a rising senior at Boston College, and has an incredible eye -- keep your own eye out for her work in the coming years. Boston photog peeps: you'd be lucky to get her on board if you can.

Enjoy this lovely, elegant Southern soiree. Grace Kelly herself would have loved it.

07.14.10  |  Workshops
shutterpros workshop: a moveable feast
Despite the swamp-like humidity and heat on Tuesday, the ShutterPROS workshop was so much fun! We had 19 photographers, many from around NC, but one from Baltimore and one from Savannah, GA. We spent the morning talking F-stops, PWs, COGS, and blogs, and then spent the entire afternoon shooting all around { Hodgin Valley Farm }.

Behind the scenes: about three months ago, I emailed a young woman who had just started an event planning business and asked if she might be willing to help us pull together a few bits and bobs for our photographers to practice on. { Leigh Pearce } agreed immediately, and then showed up with an incredible set of inspiration boards. Bits and bobs, my foot! Leigh and her assistant Dylan tirelessly scoured thrift stores all around the Triad for antique skeleton keys, worked with Kit Rodenbough from { Design Archives } for wardrobe (the wedding dress belonged to Kit's grandmother), coordinated with Stacy from The Farmer's Wife for gorgeous florals, and with Lee Comer from { The Iron Hen } for an unbelievable feast. I loved my wedding in 1999, but if it knew any better, it would be very jealous to know how I felt about THIS "wedding." Jealous indeed.

Leigh found our stunning models, a bride-and-groom-to-be whose wedding she's coordinating in October (to be photographed by yours truly -- lucky me!). Check out the bride's birdcage veil, handmade by photographer/artist extraordinaire { Renee McCardell } (also one of the attendees). The pretend ceremony shots were taken inside the catering kitchen at the barn where there happened to be some white partition curtains that made a perfect backdrop. The handmade escort cards were tied to a fence gate that Leigh found leaning against a shed. The "favors" were CDs for the photographers to take home, containing sample documents that we use in the studio, plus discount codes for some of my favorite vendors (ShootQ, Shootsac, Get It Together Kit, LensProToGo). The CD sleeves were handmade by our friend, Pennsylvania photographer { Jessica Lewis }. We also set up the Limelight and got shots of everyone (except Traci, who arrived later in the afternoon). Just before a lusty storm arrived, I took a few quick headshots -- the one thing most photographers don't have is a photo of themselves -- and the whipping wind did some lovely things with their hair.

Seriously. It was just too much fun. We have already mapped out the next ShutterPROS workshop for the fall, the date of which will be announced soon. Stay tuned!

garden wedding: haley + tristan
I don't even know how to begin to describe what it felt like to be at this wedding. { Traci } and I darn-near shorted out all our gear from the weeping, and I had to decide if a huge sniffle in the middle of the ceremony was better than just letting everything run down my face (I opted for the latter).

So, remember these two from their romantic { engagement session } a few weeks ago? They were married in the backyard of Haley's family home here in Greensboro -- her mother spent the whole year creating and tending to the incredible garden. That is, when she wasn't hand-sewing Haley's gown without a pattern -- she created the entire design from a photo in a bridal magazine. She even thought to include adorable lace pockets stitched under the layers of the gown so Haley could carry a tissue and her lipstick. Amazing woman.

The ceremony was under a billowy white tent, and in addition to a handmade wooden table for the altar, a delicate gardenia tree stood in for Haley's younger sister Natalie, who passed away three years ago. Her spirit was very much present every minute of the day, and the tree was a beautiful tribute to her, with a moss basket to hold Haley's bouquet and a tiny nest for the rings. The florals (including the sweet tree) were all done by the incredible women at { Bloemenbinder }.

Haley gave cufflinks to her dad just before the ceremony, each of which were two-sided lockets -- one with space for a photo of her and her dad from the wedding day, and the other with photo placeholders for "future grandbabies." :)

The reception was at { The Empire Room }, cake by { Cake }, and we had a { Limelight } portrait station set up for all the guests.

And of course, at the heart of everything were Haley and Tristan, whose devotion to each other gave off a glow that lit up the whole Eastern seaboard.

Ah, romance!
